Motion Lab help

Open a video, make a measurement, and move through frames. Contextual instructions inside the workspace explain each active tool.

Start a trial

Open Video, name the project or trial, then choose a local video or image or drop it into the workspace. MP4 with H.264 video is the most broadly supported choice.

Navigate frame by frame

Use the transport controls, timeline, or Left/Right arrows. Hold Shift with an arrow to move ten frames. Set the analysis range with the `[ In` and `Out ]` buttons or the matching bracket keys.

Calibrate distance

Open Calibration, confirm the reference length, then click its two endpoints. Leaving it at the default 1 m is appropriate only when that is the true reference. Use four-point planar calibration when the camera is not perpendicular to the plane of motion.

Measure an angle

Activate Angle and select three points. The middle point is the vertex. Select the annotation later to edit its label and style.

Track a point

Under Tracking, choose Image-feature tracking after placing a landmark on a clear, textured feature. During a short occlusion, Motion Lab predicts from recent motion and linked segment lengths, labels hidden frames as estimates, and searches for a plausible reappearance. Correct the first uncertain frame and continue from that keyframe when needed.

Correctable pose estimation

Choose a Landmark template, then use Estimate landmarks (AI). Motion Lab runs RTMPose Body26 locally when available and uses MediaPipe as a local fallback. Pose output remains a correctable, confidence-gated estimate; editing a point records the corrected location as manual. Low-confidence or segmentation-invalid landmarks remain gaps rather than being reported as measurements.

Annotations

Use the fixed toolbar below the video for setup, landmarks, measurements, annotations, comparison, and screenshots. Add free-form lines, arrows, regions, text, spotlights, and frame-specific visual notes after the structured measurement workflow. Settings can place the vertical view-control rail at the right, left, top, or bottom, or hide it.

View graphs

Open Graphs, choose a parameter, and select Add graph. Two or more graphs start side by side; Layout also provides Overlay, Tabs, and Rows. Drag the separator between video and graphs to resize them, or select Full graph without hiding the workflow menu. Export graph or tracking values as a native Excel workbook or CSV.

Compare and track sources (Pro)

Click the split-view button in the toolbar below the video to divide the stage into two panes. Click Add view to expand progressively to three or four. Each empty pane has one Open video or image action. Select a pane; its cyan frame identifies the active analysis view. Video, Calibration, Coordinates, Tracking, Measurements, Graphs, Settings, and Annotations then apply to that source while each view keeps independent data. Focus fills the stage with one source while keeping every other view loaded, and Show all returns to the synchronized grid.

Build a report

Open Report and select the trial name, model-fitting frame, graphs, results, events, and methods to include. Multi-video model images can be arranged side by side or one after another. Print to PDF or save editable HTML.

Export results

Use Export in Graphs for Excel, CSV, and figures, or Annotations for an annotated frame. The camera button on the video toolbar saves the current source frame with its analytical overlays, without interface controls. Excel provides separate Tracking data, Graph data, and Trial sheets. Exports include units and method metadata.

Estimated kinetics and anthropometry

Enter body mass in kg and enable Kinetics estimates after spatial calibration. Motion Lab estimates 2D GRF vectors, segment inertial forces, and segment inertial moments from tracked motion; height is derived from the calibrated landmark span. Segment mass fractions are adapted from Dempster, W.T. (1955), Space Requirements of the Seated Operator and de Leva, P. (1996), Adjustments to Zatsiorsky-Seluyanov’s segment inertia parameters (Journal of Biomechanics), with the workflow described as an estimate in the tradition of Winter, D.A. (2009), Biomechanics and Motor Control of Human Movement. These values do not replace force-plate, instrumented-pedal, or clinical measurements.

Understand local processing

Source media is decoded and analyzed on this device. Optional account sync stores project JSON only, never source video.

Recover work after a refresh

Motion Lab automatically saves the active analysis to this browser, including landmarks, tracks, calibration, measurements, annotations, graph settings, and the current frame. A same-tab refresh restores it automatically. If the browser cannot reopen the local source itself, select that video or image again; reattaching it preserves the restored analysis. Source media is not copied into account storage.

Keyboard access

Press Space to play or pause, Escape to cancel a tool, Delete to remove the selected point or annotation, and Ctrl+Z to undo.
